Investigations are ongoing, says Annuar Musa.
THE communications and multimedia minister has ordered internet service providers (ISPs) to block an open-source intelligence website selling personal data.
Annuar Musa said the order was issued on Sunday, hours after the website and its activities were exposed on Twitter.
“Immediate checks and investigations were conducted by the ministry through the Personal Data Protection Department, Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, and CyberSecurity Malaysia on the contents and background of the website the same day,” he said in a statement yesterday.
He said further investigation was being jointly conducted by the various agencies, including the National Cybersecurity Agency (Nacsa), police and Bank Negara.
Annuar said the ministry will continue to monitor and supervise the processing of personal data in commercial transactions to ensure it complies with the Personal Data Protection Act 2010 (Act 709).
“The government agencies will always ensure the security of personal data owned by the federal government and state governments.
“The federal and state governments are also advised to use the seven personal data protection principles under Act 709 as guidelines or best practices to ensure the personal data of Malaysians are safe.
Annuar said under section 130 of Act 709, the sale of personal data is punishable by a RM500,000 fine and three years in jail or both.
“Cooperation from every quarter is important to curb leaks, misuse or sale of personal data.” – Bernama, June 15, 2022.
